Speech And Debate Compete At Nationals

Eight members of the PHS Speech and Debate team finished their fantastic season June 18-23 at the National Speech and Debate Tournament held in Birmingham, Ala. Students who make it to the tournament rank in the top 1 to 3 percent in their events in the nation just by qualifying.

Junior Jillian Jetmore was a semifinalist in informative speaking and finished in 11th place. She automatically qualified next year for the national tournament. Great job Jillian!

  • Sophomore Pallavi Jonnalagadda - 86th place in U.S. Extemporaneous Speaking (Top 3 percent in the nation)
  • Junior Avery O’Bar - Top 86 in Lincoln-Douglas Debate (Debate Elimination Round qualifier)
  • Junior Janna Withrow - 41st place in Informative Speaking (Octafinalist)
  • Senior Ellie Gorny - Top 3 percent in the nation in Congress
  • Senior Marko Jovanovic - Top 3 percent in the nation in Public Forum Debate
  • Senior Alec Mitchell - Named a presiding officer in Congress
  • Senior Matthew Styslinger - Top 3 percent in the nation in Public Forum Debate
