Course Objective
The course is designed to develop an understanding and appreciation of the microbial world. A variety of techniques and skills will be used and developed in this course including reading, laboratory work, classroom discussions and internet research. Additionally, the course will develop the laboratory skill essential to the study of microbes. A variety of lab techniques will be incorporated in this class including use of the light microscope, techniques used to culture, isolate, maintain and identify microbes.
Methods
A variety of techniques and skills will be used and developed in this course including text reading, laboratory work, classroom discussions, classroom activities, and researching.
Student Expectations
1. Be prepared
Homework assignments are due at the beginning of class. Late assignments will receive a 50% deduction. It is a student's responsibility to contact the teacher outside of class to make arrangements for missed work. Missed tests must be scheduled with the teacher the day a student returns to class.
2. Be on time
Using the restroom and going to your locker should be done during your passing period.
3. Be safe
Practice aseptic techniques and follow proper laboratory safety procedures at all times.
4. Be respectful and honest
Evaluation
The following activities will be used to assess students
1. Laboratory work. Many labs will require a foraml lab report.
2. Homework
3. Projects and papers. Students will be required to write at least one research paper.
4. Quizzes. Quizzes will be given each Monday.
5. Tests. Tests will be given twice a quarter.
6. Semester exam. A semester exam covering all the material studied during the semester will be given during finals week
Course Materials
The class does not have a textbook. A variety of handouts and internet resources will be used to study microbes. Readings from the following websites will be assigned periodically.
