Pembroke Hill is excited to announce that Sharon Cole will join the school as athletic director beginning in the 2018-19 school year.

“Sharon is an experienced educator, coach and leader, who understands the importance of building strong relationships,” explained Mike Hill, upper school principal. “She also has an impressive record of putting students first and will work closely with retiring athletic director Don Earnest to ensure a smooth transition in leadership.”

Sharon comes to Pembroke Hill after spending nearly 29 years with the Blue Springs, Mo., School District. Retiring in 2017, she served as the assistant principal/activities director of the Blue Springs Freshman Center from 2001 to 2017. For 12 years prior to that, Sharon was a physical education/health teacher, department chair and coach at Blue Springs High School. Her coaching experience includes volleyball, basketball, track, softball and tennis.

“Her wealth of experience in Missouri interscholastic athletics, coupled with her student-centered approach, will allow our athletic department continued growth and success,” said Brian Bartelli, middle school principal. “Whether it be on or off the field, her passion for encouraging and fostering success for young people is evident. I look forward to cheering on our teams from the sidelines with Sharon.”

Sharon said, “I am extremely happy to join Pembroke Hill School and am grateful for the opportunity to serve as athletic director. The tradition at the school is the top reason I applied for this position. Everyone who I have met has been extremely caring, supportive and passionate about students.”

Sharon attended the University of Missouri-Columbia where she was a member of the women's basketball team from 1979 to 1981. She then transferred to the University of Central Missouri (UCM) and continued her basketball career from 1981 to 1983. She played on the UCM Jennies softball team in 1982. Both of Sharon’s degrees - a bachelor of science in physical education/health (grades 7-12) and a master of science in secondary school administration - are from UCM. She earned her Master Athletic Administrator Certification in 2005.

“Our community is very fortunate to have Sharon lead our athletic department,” Don Earnest said. “She comes to us with a tremendous amount of experience and an outstanding reputation in the greater Kansas City area for her work in athletic administration. An active professional locally, regionally and nationally, Sharon will bring great energy and enthusiasm to our community.”

Sharon has been very involved in a variety of capacities with the Missouri Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (MIAAA); she served as the first female president of the organization from 2009 to 2011. In recognition of her dedication to her profession, Sharon was named Director of the Year in 2011 by MIAAA and received the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association’s Award of Merit in 2011.

Very much anticipating her association with Pembroke Hill, Sharon shared, “I am excited to build relationships with members of the school community. I believe that interscholastic athletics supplement the educational curriculum and are vital to the development of our students. It will be important to continue traditions while helping coaches and athletes grow. Participation in sports teaches us many lessons and gives each of us a sense of belonging, which instills pride in our school. I look forward to becoming a Raider!”

Welcome to Pembroke Hill, Sharon!
