Upper School Speech And Debate Team Capture District Congress Sweepstakes Title; Four Qualify For Nationals

The upper school speech and debate squad captured the district Congress sweepstakes championship for the second consecutive year on Saturday, April 6. The host team did a tremendous job of helping run the national qualifying competition. Speech and debate coach Justin Smith said, "I am immensely proud of all of our students that helped run this tournament, and I'm eternally grateful to all the parents who supported us."

In addition to hosting the daylong competition, the team also qualified four students to nationals. Congratulations to the following students:

  • Kat Brown - House (Champion and National Qualifier)
  • Mulan Jiang - House (Runner-Up and National Qualifier)
  • Dasha McDonald - Senate (Runner-Up and National Qualifier)
  • Shirom Makkad-House (fourth place and National Qualifier)

With the Congress qualifications, the squad set school records in the number of national qualifications received (10) and number of students qualified (nine). The National Speech and Debate Tournament will be held June 16-21, in Dallas. Congratulations to our national qualifiers:
