Middle School English Classes Create Identity-Based Collages

Middle school students in Alli Jordan and Caleb Westbrook's English classes created collages inspired by the book Piecing Me Together. Students picked at least three different materials to make their collage and had to include at least five words. The collage ultimately made a shape symbolic to the student.

The protagonist of the book, Jade, feels at conflict with her identity until she gains the power to use her voice and show the world her art through collages. The book asks questions about race, friendships and the labels we give ourselves and each other.

The teachers' new English class centers around issues of identity, diversity, inclusion and equity.
