Weekend Raider Update: April 5, 2021

Spring sports swung fully into action last week, with several sports getting their seasons underway. Here is your Weekend Raider Update for April 5, 2021.

Baseball
The varsity baseball team went 1-2 this past week. The team defeated Leavenworth, 9-3, and lost to St. Pius X, 13-2, and to Blue Valley West, 6-2. The team plays Tuesday, April 6, against Midwest Adventist.

Girls Soccer
The varsity girls soccer team split their games, going 1-1 on the week with a victory over Bishop LeBlond, 5-1, on Tuesday, March 30, and losing Thursday, April 1, to Grain Valley, 3-1. The girls host the KC Classic starting today, April 5, through Thursday, April 8.

Boys Lacrosse
The varsity boys lacrosse team went to 2-0 on the season, defeating Mill Valley, 17-3, last Friday, April 2. The JV squad also won, 15-2. Rocky Grossman scored three goals and garnered 5 assists. Wade Boles scored five goals in the varsity victory. The team returns to action Wednesday, April 7, against Lawrence.

Boys Tennis
The varsity boys tennis team placed second at the Pembroke Hill doubles tournament Saturday, April 3. The team lost to Rockhurst (2-1), swept Liberty (3-0) and defeated Summit Christian Academy (2-1). The varsity team also defeated St. Thomas Aquinas (9-0) on Monday, March 29, and Liberty (6-3) on Thursday, April 1. Several members of the JV squad competed in the varsity Platte County Invitational and won the tournament last Thursday! Eight teams competed and PHS finished with 22 points, ahead of Liberty North (19 points). The event featured 8-person draws for #1-#6 singles and three draws of eight for #1-2-3 doubles. PHS walked away with five titles– #3 singles (Topher Thornberry), #4 singles (Will Greaves), #5 singles (Jimmy O'Connell), #2 doubles (Topher Thornberry/Piersen Foote), and #3 doubles (Will Greaves/Jimmy O'Connell), and a second place finish at #2 singles, Adam Bell. All nine players contributed points. The team competes against Barstow tomorrow, April 6.

Boys Golf
The varsity boys golf team opened its season with victories over Barstow last Wednesday, March 31, at Creekmoor Golf Course. The varsity squad shot 164 to Barstow's 190. Ryan Lee shot an even part 36 and Josh Murphy shot 40. The JV squad also defeated Barstow, 205-244. Henry Freilich led the way with a 44. The team is competing today, Monday, April 5, against Blue Valley Northwest at the Nicklaus Golf Club at Lionsgate. 

Track and Field
The varsity track and field team competed at the Smithville Invitational Thursday, April 1. The boys team took 4th place with 85 points, its highest total in over 10 seasons! The girls team took 7th in the competition. Results from the competition are below.

Boys

  • Jackson Hargroves - 5th place in 1600m, 3rd place in 3200m
  • Julian Nunez - 7th place in 800m
  • Niko van Zanten - 8th place in 800m
  • Darin Conley - 1st place in triple jump, 2nd place shot put, 2nd place in discus
  • Devin Conley - 2nd place in 100m, 5th place in 200m, 3rd place in high jump
  • Aiden Lacy - 4th place in 100m, 3rd place in 200m, 5th place in long jump
  • Cooper Starks - 6th place in high jump
  • Boys 4x100m relay (Darin, Devin, Aiden, Cooper) - 1st place


Girls

  • Hadley Jetmore - 1st place in pole vault, 1st place in 100m, 1st place in 400m,
    2nd place in 200m
  • Preya Nguyen - 3rd place in 100m hurdles
  • Elsa Wright - 6th place in 100m, 6th place in 200m
  • India Williams - 7th place in 1600m
  • Reaghan Gaffney - 6th place in the 3200m
