Extended Day Program

Five lower school students pose during a game of four square

Pembroke Hill offers the Extended Day Program for families who require care after the conclusion of the regular school day for students from early years through eighth grade. Under the guidance of PHS teachers, students complete homework assignments, read, play and participate in after school clubs and activities. The program provides a safe, nurturing place that encompasses a wide variety of after-school activities for students.

Extended Day care is available until 6 p.m. through the academic school year. Our program also offers children continuity of care by providing childcare on many days that school is not in session. The Extended Day staff takes safety seriously and is trained in first-aid and CPR. Given the active nature of some of the activities, occasionally, a bump or bruise results. Please be assured we will contact you with anything more than a minor injury or illness. Drop-in care is available based on our staffing.

Parents of early childhood and lower school students must sign students out of Extended Day to ensure the safety of students and for our record-keeping process. The sign-out sheet will always be with a staff member.

COVID-19 Response Changes To Extended Day

Our COVID-19-response framework includes modifications to the Extended Day program while we implement social distancing and other risk mitigation to decrease the spread of COVID-19. Until mitigations are no longer needed, we will not offer enrichment classes and clubs for lower school or childcare days. For families enrolling at Pembroke Hill during the school year (2020-21), please inquire about Extended Day availability for your grade.

Early Childhood

Offered in a multi-age setting and hosted in a room in the early childhood building, the goal of the early childhood Extended Day program is to offer children a program that allows them to de-stress from their day. The schedule allows a great deal of flexibility with lots of free play both inside and outside.

Teaching staff provides children with age-appropriate activities through a balanced schedule of small and large group settings with quiet and active play, including outdoor fun, arts, crafts and music. Activities are planned, but children have the option either to participate or to do other independent activities or interact with teachers.

Lower School

The Extended Day program for lower school students is offered in Deramus Field House.

Students in grades K-2 are escorted to the field house for attendance and snack before being given the opportunity to participate in organized or free play activities. Activities are held inside the field house, on the playground, and on occasion elsewhere on campus.

Third-fifth grade students have a study hall period until 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, encouraging them to complete homework before leaving campus. Staff is available to assist children with homework when necessary. After study hall and on Fridays, students can choose to participate in planned or free-time activities.

Middle School

A faculty-supervised, after-school study hall program for middle school students is offered from 3:30-6 p.m., Monday through Friday in Kemper Library.

Enrichment Classes and Clubs

The Auxiliary Program offers after-school enrichment classes to students in grades K-5. These classes are designed to engage students in activities with their peers that include a variety of topics. Classes are offered in two sessions during the school year and typically meet once a week for eight weeks.

Enrollment is open to all students, and is on a first-come, first-served basis. Students that do not have an Extended Day contract on the day the class meets will be charged an additional fee. Please note, space is limited in each class.

Childcare Days

The following days are offered as an additional childcare service for families who are in need of full-day childcare when school is not in session or dismisses early.  (Changes in this schedule have been made during 2020-21 due to COVID-19.)

Fall In-Service Days
EY-Fifth Grade Parent/Teacher Conference

Winter Break
(No care is offered on Christmas Day or New Year's Day.)

Martin Luther King Day
Winter Teacher In-Service Day
Presidents' Day
Spring Break

During Parent/Teacher conferences, Extended Day offers optional childcare, from 7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., for students in early childhood through fifth grade. While this is not a normal school day, the Extended Day staff does work collaboratively with our resource teachers to provide students a variety of age-appropriate activities, including story-time, music, games, art and more! Lunch is provided.

If your child has an Extended Day contract to stay past 3 p.m., on that day of the week, the fee is included in the cost of your Extended Day contract. Students who do not have a contract will be billed on a drop-in basis ($16 per hour), up to a maximum of $85. This fee will be charged to your business office account. You may register your child for the full day, or choose only to register for care during your conference time.

Cancellations must be made by the designated date to avoid charges for prearranged staffing. Reservations made after the announced deadline and drop-ins will incur an additional fee of $20 per day.

Please note, school is closed and we do not offer care on the following days:

  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Break
  • The last day of the semester prior to Winter Break
  • Christmas Day
  • New Year's Day
  • The last day of school
  • Memorial Day
