2020-21 Annual Report

Dear Pembroke Hill Community,

On behalf of the students, faculty and staff of Pembroke Hill School, we thank you for your unwavering support and commitment to our school. Over the last year, you championed our faculty and staff, supported our students and provided resources which allowed us to remain focused on our work and our mission.

Each year, your giving inspires us. This past fiscal year, it also provided immense motivation. It reminded us that Pembroke Hill is made up of dedicated teachers, staff and families, and by working together, our capacity to deliver the best education and student experience possible is limitless.

Your philanthropy was the ultimate testament to your belief in PHS.

  • The Pembroke Hill School Fund continues to be essential to the school. You donated $1,386,532 which is the most raised in the school’s history for the annual fund. We are so grateful to our annual donors and we intend to continuously grow this program.

  • It is because of our supporters that our school is thriving with strong enrollment, innovative academic and extracurricular programs, talented students and dedicated faculty and staff.

  • Our students are excelling in all areas of school life including in academics, arts and athletics: we hosted fall plays, our boys basketball team went undefeated in the regular season, our girls volleyball team won districts, track and field qualified 12 athletes for state championships, boys soccer made it to the final 4 in state and the upper school robotics team competed in the remote MO/KS State Championship.

  • We continue to have momentum for the Building Together Campaign project and have enjoyed how these new spaces have come to life this school year.

  • We hosted our first ever Building Bright Futures: A Day of Parent Giving in April that resulted in over 240 donors making a gift throughout the day for over $180,000 raised in 36-hours.

This publication includes the names of all of our donors who made gifts to the school between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021, including to the Pembroke Hill School Fund, the Building Together Campaign, Memorials, Endowment Funds and Planned Giving.

As you will see in this Annual Report, Pembroke Hill School remains on a strong financial foundation due to this collective support. We are THANKFUL for the resilience and compassion of our community.

Vassie James Hill Society

Vassie James Hill was a woman of vision. She founded the Country Day School in 1910 and, together with Lalla Ruth Carr Patton, founded Sunset Hill in 1913. She supported the work of pioneering educator John Dewey and what became known as the Progressive Movement. Driven by a strong belief that the education of young people is society's most important act and that great value must be placed on children and their individual capabilities, Mrs. Hill set out to establish schools unlike anything Kansas City had ever known. She was successful in her pursuit and today, more than a century later, Pembroke Hill is still grounded in her fundamental belief that students learn best by actively participating in a wide variety of experiences.

Members of the Vassie James Hill Society have continued Mrs. Hill's legacy of devotion to young people and their education and value Pembroke Hill's tradition of excellence and student-centered approach to education.

Donors of $2,500 and more are recognized as members of the Vassie James Hill Society for the 2020-21 fiscal year.
